DIY Farmhouse Sign

I decided to use some of the leftovers of our chicken coop project, and some leftover cedar from another project to make a farmhouse style sign for over our bed.

I used a piece of half inch plywood, painted it white (just used exterior flat white paint cause that’s what we used on the coop) and I had Vito cut it a little to the size I needed then cut the cedar to be the perfect width for the frame, about 2inches. I’m still a little nervous to use the big circular saw!

I also asked him to cut a notch into the long sides of the frame so I could easily glue and pin the plywood to the frame. Then I got to cut the frame boards to size (yeah I used the chop saw!)

It’s so fun seeing projects coming together! Next step is glue and pins! I love the pinning! Pin guns are fun!

It’s done!… Almost. As the glue dries I set up a design to create a stencil with my Cricut. It took me a while to decide what I wanted the sign to say. I was searching Pinterest for cute sayings or song lyrics… Finally, I decided on the lyrics to our first dance song. Forever Like That by Ben Rector.

The Cricut cut out my pattern. To create the stencil, I weeded out the letters. This is where it got a little tricky. I needed the center of letters to stay with the stencil pattern, so I had to use some transfer tape.

With the stencil on, I can get to painting! I found that even with a vinyl stencil, the paint can still bleed under the edges so it’s best to tap like you would with a regular plastic/mylar stencils.

I love peeling away a stencil!

Vito helped me hang it, and I’m super happy with how it came out!
